Alonso Varela is a Visual Effects Supervisor and Founder of Jimsonweed, with over 25 years of experience in the international film and television industry.
His work has been recognised at the highest level of the industry. He served as a VFX Supervisor on Napoleon (2023), which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects. His supervisory work on The Witcher Season 3 earned the BAFTA Craft Award for Special, Visual & Graphic Effects, while The Boys Season 3 was Emmy shortlisted and received a Visual Effects Society nomination for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode.
Earlier in his career, Alonso was part of the Academy Award-winning team for Best Visual Effects on The Jungle Book (2016), and contributed to two additional Academy Award-winning films, Ex Machina and Avatar: The Way of Water, as well as multiple Academy Award-nominated productions.
As Founder of Jimsonweed, he focuses on building a studio model that bridges development and high-end visual effects execution. Alongside this, he continues to work selectively as a Production VFX Supervisor on projects aligned with his creative vision.
Across his career, Alonso has focused on delivering high-end visual effects that integrate seamlessly with live-action, working closely with directors to achieve both technical precision and narrative impact.
